SAH Round Robin and other projects in progress

I am jumping into the Stay-at-Home Round Robin (SAHRR) put together by several of my blogiing friends. See who they are below:
Chris @ Chrisknitssews
Emily @ The Darling Dogwood
Anja @ Anja Quilts
Roseanne & Sue @ Home Sewn by Us
Wendy @ Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life
Susan @ Quilt Fabrication
Gail @ Quilting Gail
See Gail’s very informative intro post on what a round robin is in quilting and what is special about this round robin. Every week, one of the bloggers listed above will give us a prompt – which is usually a type of quilt block or technique. The participants will interpret that prompt as it suits their quilt. The prompts so far have been piano keys, plus sign and flying geese. Thank you all for this fun and interesting project. It’s like a pick your own adventure story. There is some mystery but I can rewrite it the way I want 🙂

I started with the center star block from a BOM I abandoned some three years ago. I was planning on adding more colors but after the first round of intense piano keys, it seems impossible to introduce a new color or a print. I will simply add a few different shades of the three main colors in the center block. I wish I had used more white in the piano key round. I think it looks very intense as it is now. To compensate, I added lots of negative space in the subsequent plus and flying geese rounds. I will have to balance it out by adding an outer round with intense color similar to the piano keys. Please leave a comment if you have suggestions or opinions on colors and color balance in this quilt so far.

I am doing the monthly color challenge by Jen at Patterns By Jen this year. These are my purple blocks for January. February color is yellow. Not yet started though.

During the holiday break I made progress cleaning my sewing room. Still not done. I need to find a home for the hundreds of books (not sewing related) we no longer need before I can take over more shelves for fabric. However, I was able to sort through the mountain of scraps I had stashed in multiple tote bags and put them in these plastic jars.

After I was done sorting and reminiscing on each piece of scrap on how and why it got there, I was tempted to start a scrap project. These heart blocks using just 2.5″ square scraps are so quick and easy and fun to make. I posted these on my IG feed – they are part of my 25 day countdown to QuiltCon. Blocks are all done. Next step is cutting and sewing the sashing strips.

The Houston Modern Quilt Guild had an orphan block challenge. The challenge is to use an orphan block – extra blocks from projects or a test block you made or a block from a project you abandoned – and make it into a (small) completed project. I had these two blocks from the same BOM as the one I used for SAHRR. I added borders in coordinating colors to make two pillows.

Combnation of feathers, swirls, straight line and ruler quilting. Note the thin hot pink inner border to add a pop.

So many fun projects! I’m so glad you’ve joined in with the SAHRR; I think you’ll find the next border will help balance out your quilt quite nicely, so stay tuned! Those purple blocks are so pretty, and I love the jars of scraps, the scrappy hearts, and the pillows!

Wow! So many great projects, Vashuda. I love what you have done on the SAHRR. Almost finished this weeks, but I will tomorrow. Those orphan blocks are giving you a lot of great projects – finished pillows and a quilt well on its way!

Beautiful projects Vasudha. I don’t have any suggestions about the SAHRR – but I will say I love the colors. I don’t really think it looks too ‘intense’. Rather I would describe it as striking. Love it.

Hi Vasudha! I’m so glad you could join us in the Round Robin. Your quilt came together quickly and I love your center medallion. It’s fabulous that is won’t be an abandoned block any longer! I really LOVE your pretty heart blocks. They have been calling to me since I saw them on IG. I don’t need a squirrel project, though! ~smile~ Roseanne
