Heather Wasaff is an artist and fabric designer and a fellow Houston Modern Quilt Guild member. She brought samples from her new line called Wacko! and I was intrigued. I brought some home and set out to design a quilt to showoff this really unique line. Checkout Heather’s artwork and cool fabric designs at www.heatherwasaff.com and also on Instagram @hfwsurfacedesigns. Her designs are also available on spoonflower. I can’t believe I forgot to take a picture of the fabric before cutting them up but Heather sent me some pictures that I include here.
The sribbbly lines converging and diverging to make so many secondary designs remind me of diagrams of electromagnetic waves showing constructive and destructive interference. Decades ago in college I took a class on antenna design here we agonized over how to strengthen signal and attenuate noise. I don;t remember anything at all except the crazy looking wave diagrams! Hence the name for this quilt – Interference.
Most of the fabric have a striped look. Some have stripes in one direction but have color variations in other direction as well, giving the appearance of a secondary stripe. Your eyes constant travel from one direction to other trying to figure out the pattern. I cut up strips of varying widths – depending on the size of the main stripe motif I wanted to highlight. Then I cut right-angled triangles across the main stripe and put them back together so that they make concentric squares or a L-shape. The individual blocks were all different sizes. I used Kona cotton solids in red, navy and another blue (forgot the name) and a background of Kona silver to make bring them up to 12″ square.
I quilted straight lines lengthwise. Using the channel lock on my frame, this baby was done in no time! The backing is Tim Holtz’s “Correspondence” in blue. The batting is Hobb’s 80/20.
During August, Island Batik ambassadors that got a spring 2019 fabric collection are showing off their projects in a month-long blog hop. The theme is Beat the Heat. This is week two. Each week, there are giveaways in on each blog on the blog hop as well as at Island Batik. My spring 2019 line is called Quiet Shades. It is a collection of soft purples, yellows and greens. Very mellow and quiet. Here’s a sneak peek of my project on the frame. It is now quilted and ready for binding. Come back next Tuesday – Aug 20th to see what I designed for this blog hop

Wow, thanks for info about Heather’s fabric! It’s unique and awesome!
Hi Vasuhda! WOWEE! I think you paid homage to these fabrics beautifully and also that your naming convention is perfect as well. The whole design really lets the fabrics sign, and that red binding really pulls that color out of the fabric. A winner all around. Your IBA fabrics are gorgeous as well – I can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with them. ~smile~ Roseanne
Love what you did with that cool fabric! How creative and fun. I need to remember vertical straight line quilting, something fun to try!
That is a great quilt!! th fabrics were perfect for it… or the quilt was perfect for the fabrics? ha ha – I think it looks wonderful!
I really love that quilt and the fabrics you used.
I do like the quilt. My first thought was what a beautiful American Hero quilt that would be! We don’t see many modern donations. The fabrics are gorgeous. So is that line of batiks you were sent. Island Batiks are very beautiful and their reputation is growing fast with all you ambassadors making such gorgeous pieces!
The print adds an interesting design to the blocks. I’m looking forward to your hop finish. Thank you for linking up with Put your foot down.
Congrats on a great quilt design with those unique fabrics!
What interesting fabric. You did a great job using it.
Loved reading your thought process for Interference, and how the design compliments Wacko. Awesome job! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
I love how you took the fabric into account in this design. I think this quilt is terrific – the overall layout as well as the individual blocks.
Vasudha, I am going to be brutally honest. Hope you can take it.
If Heather does not hire you to showcase her next line of fabric she is not paying attention.
Love your design, your process and your quilt 🙂
This quilt and fabric are fabulous! So interesting to look at, my top quality when “evaluating” quilts or art. Great job!
