Wavy Imelda and TGIFF

This is Wavy Imelda. She is named after the tropical depression Imelda passing through Houston this week, and thanks to her, I don’t have a good picture. The backyard is soaked. So many homes are flooded and the roads are a mess. I’m so thankful we are all safe and dry at home.

This is a quilt for our guild charity program. My guild, The Houston Modern Quilt Guild (@houstonmqg), makes charity quilts mainly for two organizations. Angela House is a rehabilitation program for formerly incarcerated women, and KatyCares is a shelter for homeless women with families. I am amazed by the number of quilts we make every year. Most of the fabric is donated by members, sponsors and businesses. The charity committee picks a pattern, and puts together bags of fabric and pattern for one or two blocks. Some members take home the bags and bring back sewn blocks. Someone else takes a few blocks and makes a quilt top. Someone else again takes the top and quilts it, and someone binds it and it’s all done. I love the way this works. Each one volunteers for what she likes to do and for as much time as she can.

This year, Ginny, our charity committee coordinator, picked the Belle Wave pattern by Fresh Lemon quilts. This is such a versatile, scrap-friendly pattern. It simply looks good with any combination of colors and fabric. About half the blocks in my quilt were made by other members. I made about half the blocks from my stash. I thought the two tone blue-white background looked cool. I pieced the top, quilted and put on the binding.

The blue geometric backing fabric was donated by a guild sponsor. I quilted it with simple straight lines, varying the spacing – like train tracks!

Today, I am hosting the Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday linky party. Please link your finishes or un-finishes to the TGIFF linky party.

What a versatile pattern. I like the color combinations used in your quilt, and the quilting gives a nice movement to the quilt. I like the way the members of your group each take the different steps of quiltmaking and work together to make the quilts. So cool. Hope you dry out from the storm soon!

Hi Vasudha! What a lovely charity quilt. I love straight-line quilting of varying widths. I think it looks modern and interesting. What a fun way of your guild to offer so many different stages of the quilt process – no one feels like they have to something they don’t enjoy. I hope that storm moves on out, and I’m sure glad to hear you’re not being impacted too much. ~smile~ Roseanne

Such a wonderful programme that your guild does! I love the way the quilts are broken down and members do what they want/feel comfortable with. You did a spectacular job on this one; love the way the quilt goes to your blue in the top left. Thanks for hosting TGIFF!

Your Imelda Waves quilt is gorgeous! I enjoyed reading about how your guild organizes charity quilts as a group effort. Our guild does something similar, but we’ve had so much fabric donated to the guild from estates and shop closings, etc that the Outreach committee cuts it up into kits that they hand out with the patterns. But the patterns tend to be very simple (not very interesting to me). I like the idea of picking up a pattern to make from your own stash, although we do have the option of course of making any kind of quilt we want from our own stashes to donate, so long as it fits the size guidelines of the hospital or other organization we’re donating to.

You were on my mind, Vasudha, when Imelda was wreaking her havoc on Houston. She was a real meanie to turn around and hit your city again. I much love your take on the storm. And though the pattern is wavy your quilting lines are ramrod straight!!! Love the variation in the background – half blue and half white. Is it partially cloudy?

That is a versatile pattern! Love the two toned background too. It looks so cool, especially with your modern quilting design. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
