Mostly Grey and TGIFF

Welcome! I am happy to host TGIFF (Thank Goodness It’s FInished Friday) this week. I am sharing Mostly Grey – a quilt I made for my oldest son.

I made the quilt top for a blog hop in July- It’s a Guy Thing. I finished quilting it in August – just in time for my son to move from Chicago to New York and start law school.

This quilt is based on a block design called Cornered by Jamie Siel (@sewbrainy), published as a block study for the Modern Quilt Guild (MQG). I modified some of the blocks, added scrappy piecing and played with the layout. The quilt is big – it finishes at 64″ x 90″. The background is Kona cotton medium grey.

My initial plan was to quilt motifs to highlight some of the squares and rectangles, and maybe quilt the Chicago skyline in a corner. Then I thought about how this is going to be used. He will be at the dorm – not sure how he will be using it and how he will be taking care of it. I decided against the hyper-planned custom quilting and went with an “overall” design. I do my quilting on a long-arm but totally free-hand. There is no advantage to quilt one design all over. So I mixed in swirls, wavy lines, feathers, paisleys and some other unidentified motifs. You can probably see wind/breeze, falling leaves, the warm rays of the sun, maybe some rain and water. I love this kind of free-motion. I turn on some music and just keep quiling whatever comes to mind until it’s done.

My son loves it. He said he uses it regularly though he had to buy some warmer blankets as the weather got a bit colder. I sent him wash/care instructions but I don’t know how often he washes it!

I love this quilt, and I love how you quilted it. That kind of flow quilting is so relaxing for me too, though I also find an allover meander very zen-like to do as well!
