Project Quilting is a series of challenges along the lines of the popular TV series Project Runway. PQ is organized by Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams and Trisha Frankland of Quilt Chicken. Season 14 just finished and it was hugely popular with almost 200 entries for most episodes. Each “episode” is a challenge with a theme or prompt. We are given one week to design, make and complete a finished project. In this blog post, I will show my projects for this season. This is my fourth year of participation in PQ. As with last year, I picked a fixed size for each project.
This year, I am making fabric postcards using an excellent tutorial from Sarah Ruiz here. Sarah started making fabric postcards as part of a 100 day project and it has since taken a life of its own. Her tutorial is very detailed and contains a number of tips and tricks. Making fabric postcards is an excellent way to try a new technique, design or, as in the case of PQ, respond quickly to a theme.
I am happy to host Thank Goddness It’s Finished Friday – TGIFF this week. Linky party is at the bottom of this post. Please link a blog post showing your finished projects.
The first challenge was The First One. My response is a rather literal/mathematical interpretation of E pluribus unum – out of many, one. Nothing deep or philosophical here. Just think fractions!
Challenge 2 was Pink Tint. My response is a very unplanned, rushed improv inspired by desert sunsets.
The 3rd challenge was the 54-40 or fight block. This is a versatile block that can look very different depending how you color it. More fun can be had if deconstructed- it looks like two fishes!
The 4th challenge was A Novel project – make something inspired by a book. I picked Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The inspiration is the giant squid which gave me serious nightmares when I was young!
The theme for the next challenge was “sew not a square”. Here’s a non-square, non-rectangle smaller version of my Wave Dancer.
Last prompt was conquer a fear. I’ve tried many hand sewing projects from hand quilting to EPP to hand appliqué and most recently- hand embroidery. None of them appealed to me. The fear part is not handwork per se but recurring episodes of pain in my hands and feet that is as yet undiagnosed. Nothing serious but the fear is real. This is an attempt to sew a few stitches as I recover from another flare up.

Wow, great fun to see all of your projects together!!! Love the postcard size parameter–great idea!

These are all great projects. I think I may borrow this idea next year. The colors are fun and fun to see them all in a group!
I started out making 8″ x 8″ each entries. It worked until the no square prompt. 🙁 Congratulations of being of the 100 and a few to complete and enter something for each of the six Project Quilting prompts.
Wonderful postcards! It is fascinating to see how each person interprets the prompts. Always such a great brain (creative and math) workout to start out the year!
