Hands2Help 2019

This is my quilt for Hands2Help hosted by Sarah of Confessions of a Fabric Addict. Each year, Sarah hosts a challenge were quilters around the world pledge to make and donate quilts to a few featured charities or a charity of their choice. My quilt goes to Mercyful Quilts – started by Bernie Kringle of Needle & Foot. The quilts are given to the Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, CA. From Sarah’s post: “The quilts are given to patients as they reach end of life stages.  The quilt provides comfort to the patient, and after the patient passes away, the family is able to take it home as a remembrance of their loved one”. The deadline for mailing the quilts was end of May but I’m late by a couple of weeks. The package went in the mail this morning and now I can write my blog post and say its really done!

Most of the fabric for this quilt came to me via my aunt who got it from a non-profit consignment store she volunteered at. They were donated by the family of a quilter who passed away. Read the full story on my Storied Dresden post. Most are old fashioned large floral prints that don’t work well with my current stash that are mostly modern prints, batiks, and solids.

The pattern for this quilt is called Quarter Cut from Susan of Quilt Fabrication and she has a great tutorial here. It is a great pattern to use up large pieces – quarter yards or fat quarters – of large scale prints. You can mix and match different styles and colors by using a sashing that pulls them all together.

I quilted a loose wishbone in the sashing and quilted each “block” of fabric with wavy lines or swirls or whatever I felt like. The backing is a blush pink solid I had left over from another project. The solid backing nicely shows off the quilting.

In other exciting news, I entered my mini quilt Burrowing (blogged here in Jan 2019) in a contest hosted by QuiltExpo. I kept seeing FaceBook ads for this expo and clicked on the link. There was a mini quilt challenge and I happened to have a mini quilt ready. I’m so thrilled to report that my quilt won 8th place and I received some really cool stuff from Clover Needlecraft. There are pins, wonder clips, mat and cutter that I always use as well as seam roller, some presser foot attachments, etc., that I want to try. All entries and the winners are here.

What a pretty quilt! Thank you for donating it to Mercyful. I’m sure they won’t mind that it was a little late, since they can use quilts all year. And congratulations on winning a prize for your cool mini quilt πŸ™‚

Your quilting is inspirational on this and a good idea for someone starting her longarm journey (its on a shortened frame). I will bookmark this to come back to! If my machine arrived early enough, the quilt I showed would have gone to Hands 2Help too. Right now, it will wait and see if any other needs will appear. Thanks for linking up to TGIFF.

Hi Vasudha! What a wonderful charity quilt. Whoever receives it will definitely love it and feel all the love you’ve sewn into it. Your quilting looks beautiful. How great that you entered the mini into the competition. Eighth place is fabulous, and what great prizes you won. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Vasudha, I received your quilt just this morning! It is stunning. The pattern is a perfect way to use the floral fabrics. Your quilting is really pretty. Thank you so much for making this for Mercyful Quilts. It is not “late” at all. We need quilts on an on-going basis and yours is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so very much!!!

Two lovely quilts. The Burrowing one tickles my funny bone. I can see that the style of the H2H quilt is a little different, but it is so so pretty and will be a comfort and well loved. Your quilted feathers are just gorgeous. Congratulations on placing and receiving that very nice prize.
