Divergent goes to QuiltCon and TGIFF

This is Divergent. It will show at QuiltCon in Austin, Feb 20-23, 2020. I submitted this for the American Patchwork & Quilting Stripes Quilt Challenge. Participants are asked to create a quilt inspired by stripes. The idea for this quilt came to me during the Thanksgiving week – just days before the deadline. I worked through the holiday weekend and completed it just hours before the deadline. I was going to blog about this for TGIFF today. QuiltCon accept/reject notices went out couple of days ago and I am so happy to report that Divergent was accepted!

I am hosting TGIFF this week. Please link up your finishes or WIPs below.

Since I made this quilt in a hurry, I don’t have any in-process pictures. I always forget take pictures anyway. I wanted to use stripes as a design element in multiple ways. The background is constructed from two dark grey fabrics that are close in color but different in texture. The darker grey is a 100% linen which is probably an apparel fabric. It is a bit thicker than quilter’s linen. The lighter grey is a chambray fabric. The two greys make a subtle striped background. I quilted straight lines parallel to the stripes to enhance the striped effect.

For the main design element, I used an ombre fabric with a dramatic spread of color. This fabric was part of a kit I bought a couple of years ago and still untouched. I decided to use it for this project. The picture above is what is left the 1.5 yards in the kit. I cut strips along the bias to give a bit of stretch as needed as well as to get a longer range of color for the center.

Ombre fabric from E. E. Schneck Company

After I quilted the background, I made quarter inch bias tape with the strips of ombre fabric using a bias tape maker and ironed on strips of fusible webbing to the back. I laid out the strips in a sort of diverging wave. I tried different layouts – straight horizontal lines with some going in a different direction, crisscrossing lines, random waves, etc., but settled for this rather simple design. The colors of the ombre are also lined up in a way to give the illusion of gentle vertical stripes.

Divergent joins Justice which will also show in Austin next year.

I also entered Diamond Showers in the Modern Traditional category but it was rejected!

Hi Vasudha! Wow. Words pretty much escape me other than WOWEE. Divergent is just stunningly beautiful, and to know that you could come up with that piece in just a few days and without a clear cut direction when you started is beyond amazing. How thrilling for you that you have TWO pieces in the show. {{Hugs}} a bunch for you.You rock and I’m so glad I’m following you to see what comes next. It seems to me you should be writing patterns for all of your designs. Happy Friday and thanks for hosting TGIFF. ~smile~ Roseanne

Oh I think Divergent should win – the optical illusion you’ve created is just wonderful! I could gaze at it all day. So glad Justice is in and not sure why Diamond Showers did not…who knows how they pick. Well-deserved on the 2 that did, and thank you for taking the time to enter quilts so others, like me, can gaze at them in awe!

Very striking design. Seeing the possibilities within a piece of fabric and transforming it into such dramatic artwork is a true gift you use so well. Very nicely done. Congratulations on receiving the well-deserved recognition.

Is not being selected in a field of 100s of beautiful quilts the same as being rejected? I don’t think so! All the quilts are beautiful. Congratulations on having two accepted. I liked reading about the process of making Divergent.
