Winding River – Island Batik blog hop

Today is my turn at the Log Cabin blog hop showcasing Island Batik fabrics from fall 2019. Each of us were given a half-yard bundle of one of the new lines. My collection is Sunset Blooms, a signature collection by Kathy Engle for Whirligig Designs. Sunset Blooms should be available in shops now. Carol Moellers is also featuring Sunset Blooms today. Don’t forget to visit her blog.

Disclosure: The fabric for this quilt was provided by Island Batik, the batting by Hobbs batting and thread by Aurifil threads as part of the Island Batik Ambassador program.

With rich purples and teals, and warm gold, there are so many ways to use this collection. Winding River uses a modified curved log cabin block. Rotating the blocks and alternating the colors gives the illusion of a winding road or a winding river.

This pattern uses four “colors” and for some of them I used a mix of fabrics with the same hue. I drafted the pattern using EQ8 and printed out the template for the block. I cut out the pieces, labeled them and organized them in piles. With the pieces organized, sewing the blocks was a breeze.

I used Hobb’s 100% wool batting. It is very light and fluffy. It is just perfect for showing off your quilting. I quilted straight lines in the outside area and medium-sized pebbles in the middle. I wanted the tan/gold areas to recede to the back, and the purple and teals to come forward. I just quilted in the ditch around the purple and teal areas but I may take it back to the machine and quilt a few more lines. I feel it needs a bit more definition that just quilting the outlines.

I used 12 fabrics in the front and the rest of them in the back. A pieced back is a perfect way to show off the larger scale prints.
Another picture showing the quilting. The pebbles are large. I like the texture it provides without too much work. My son said it looks like the yellow brick road.

Pattern: I am planning to publish a pattern for this quilt. I will have instructions for baby (40″ X 44″), lap (55″ X 55″) and twin (60″ X 88″) sizes. I should have a draft of the pattern ready sometime in mid-April since I have some travel and other commitments coming up in March. I am looking for a few pattern testers. If you are interested, please let me know in the comments or send me an email.

There are two giveaways.:
1. The Rafflecopter below is for a stack (10″ squares) and a strip set of Sunset Blooms, and is hosted by Island Batik. This runs till end of this week.
