Every year, Sarah of Confessions of a Fabric Addict hosts a drive called Hands2Help. Quilters around the world sign up to make a quilt or two or three or ten and send it out to a charity organization. In 2019, 200 quilters made 876 quilts. Purple Princess is the first of two quilts I’ve made for H2H. This will go to Little Lambs Foundation for Kids. It is an organization in Utah which provides comfort kits to children transitioning into foster care, emergency shelters, etc. They are accepting baby quilts.
For this baby quilt, I used some beautiful Island Batik fabric from a collection called Blue Sea. This collection has turquoise, purples and black with sea-themed prints – mermaids, fish, turtles, octopus, etc. I added a bit of coral to add a pop to the mix. The Island Batik ambassador challenge this month is a free theme. This is the first of 2 or 3 projects I have planned this month. I used my tutorial Two Hour baby quilt.
I quilted most of the quilt with straight lines but add a bit of free-motion quilting in the coral section.
This is a “self-binding” quilt. The backing is trimmed to about 1″ bigger than the quilt all around. It is then folded to the front, turned under and stitched down. There is a simple trick to get that perfect mitered corners I learned recently. I used this wonderful video tutorial (originally a FB live video) by Kathleen of Kathleen McMusing. Thank you, Kathleen!
Hi Vasudha! Your quilt is gorgeous and I especially like the self-binding in the deep purple. It seems to really pull it all together and draws out that shade in the other fabrics. Your swirls in the coral fabric gives it a fun and special look and it’s like the straight-line quilting is pointing or drawing our eyes to it. What a great charity quilt. ~smile~ Roseanne
Oh the pretty IB fabrics make for a very pretty baby quilt. Ahhh it feels so good to make and donate a quilt doesn’t it!
Lovely. I like the look of this quilt and am going to hop over and check out the tutorial for it. Thank you!!
I love the coral pop. It really goes well with the sea turtle print. The freeform quilting adds depth and a wonderful texture to the quilt. Such a nice gift to someone you’ll never know. Such a great way to touch a life.
That’s really pretty, and it looks so soft
I didn’t even recognise the Blue Sea collection with the coral added in until you said. Even though I worked with it last year. Amazing how one addition changes the whole feel of it, and a great demonstration of how the different Island Batik collections can be mixed and matched. Terrific donation quilt, thanks for sharing with the Chameleon’s Colour & Inspiration party.
A lovely and sweet quilt. Pretty quilting, I love the straight lines and flowers together!
Thanks for linking up with TGIFF!, and maybe see you on Sunday for Patchwork & Quilts linky party!
What a great quilt – That quilting in the coral is just set off so wonderfully by the other colors and the straight line!!
Such a gorgeous quilt! Thanks for being part of Hands2Help 2020!
So pretty! And I love how the mermaids dance along the center of the quilt, and the sea turtles float along as well. A fabulous finish! And thanks for the link to your tutorial; I have a group of fat quarters that I think will be perfect for this pattern & my guilds children’s quit project!
Very nice quilt, I really like the straight lines and free motion quilting together.
It’s so pretty. Someone is going to love it.
Lovely way to use the free theme! What a beautiful quilt for charity. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
That’s a great quilt. Love the quilting in the coral section.
