Today is my turn to show a project from the book Scrappy Improv Quilting by Kelly Young of My Quilt Infatuation. Kelly’s book has 22 mini quilt projects using her scrappy improv technique. I chose the pattern called Funkytown but sized up the blocks a bit to make a baby quilt. She has instructions in the book for making larger quilts, pillows and many other projects in addition to the mini quilt patterns.
When Kelley asked a couple of months ago if I wanted to make a quilt from her book for a blog tour, it took me no more than 30 seconds to say yes! I loved Kelly’s first book on Scrappy Improv called Stash Statement. I particularly loved her scrappy improv technique where you use just your scraps to “make” fabric and use them in your projects. The improv technique is a low-stress, fun experience because it decouples the improv process from making the blocks.
This is Kelly’s version of Funkytown in the book. It is a mini quilt and measures about 30″ square.
There are the scrappy improv “fabric” I used to make the houses and trees. See more closeups below. I had fun quilting the houses – the roof tops and doors, the trees and the clouds and wind.
Visit Kelly’s blog to see what others have made from the patterns in the book. The mini quilt designs are very cute – they are perfect as wall décor, quick gifts, a pillow or a tote bag. There are so many I want to make. The best value in this book are the ideas and techniques that Kelly offers that you can take well beyond projects in this book. Scrappy improv has so many possibilities. I can see myself using Kelly’s improv technique in many of my other projects as well.
What a fun quilt! I am loving all the versions I am seeing.
Your Funkytown baby quilt is so much fun, Vashuda! I’m glad you enjoyed the book! Thank you so much for participating in the blog hop.
