Spiral Nova for Plum Pudding Blog Tour

This is Plum Pudding, designed by Kathy Engle of Island Batik for Sherry Shish of Powered By Quilting. This fabric line is in the stores now. I am happy to join Sherry and others in a blog tour to celebrate the lovely colors and prints of Plum Pudding.

This line has a beautiful blend of purple and grey, and has a good range of values from dark to light. I had so many ideas for this collection that it was hard to decide on just one. In the end, I decided to remake the Spriral Nova in a much larger scale. I published Spiral Nova as a free tutorial in 2018 and to this day, it is the most visited page on my blog.

In addition to the dark, medium and light fabrics from this collection, I wanted to add two fabrics in a contrasting color as an accent. While any of these combinations would work, I think the lime green won out.

I wanted this to be a soft and cozy quilt – which meant no heavy quilting – and wanted to finish quilting it in one evening. I also wanted the quilting to emphasize the spiral movement. I first quilted a straight lines in the background area using the channel locks on my frame. This went quite fast. Then, I quilted three different motifs using three different thread colors in the purple, green and white areas of the spiral. The contrast in the designs emphasizes the spiral. Paisleys in the purple, wavy flames in the green and pebbles in the white areas.

Be sure to visit Sherry’s post on the blog tour for a giveaway of Plum Pudding fabric. Her post also has a list of all bloggers in the tour. Come back each day till June 25th to see what each blogger is making with Plum Pudding.

Take a look at my other Spiral Nova quilts: Spiral Nova tutorial, 20″ blue mini quilt and the spiral nova tree skirt. I am thinking of doing a quilt-along for Spiral Nova. If you want to make a spiral nova quilt, and you would like to participate in a quilt along, please let me know in the comments below.

I love your Spiral Nova in all its versions. Of course I would participate in the QAL pending all the stars and planets align harmoniously đŸ˜€ Ooh that touch of lime is so tart and spicy – it brings a perfect balance to the purple sweetness.
