Kaleidoscope Churn

Kaliedoscope Churn is my first pattern in a print magazine. It is published in the Summer 2021 issue of Quilter’s World that hit the stands on April 13th. This issue has several two-block designs with interesting secondary patterns.

My design uses two traditional blocks – kaleidoscope and churn dash, which makes an interesting secondary pattern giving the illusion of curves. It sews together quite quickly because churn dash is an easy block compared to kaleidoscope. Since this was for a summer issue, I used two bright blues and two bright oranges to bring in the Sun and the seas. Robert Kaufmann generously provided the fabric – Kona cotton solids in white, Pacific, Paris Blue, Orange and Tangerine.

Quilting: In the blue and orange triangles, I used threads that matched the fabric and quilted nested triangles to emphasize the triangle units. For the background areas, I wanted to deemphasize the plus sign in the center of the churn dash. To do this, I quilted some freehand curving feathers. I wanted to emphasize the illusion of circles in this pattern. To do that, I echoed around the triangles and used a wishbone or crisscross design in the region between the triangles.
