Hearts on Point tutorial – Part 1

15 Comments on Hearts on Point tutorial – Part 1

On this Valentine’s Day, I want to share the first part of my Hearts on Point tutorial. Part 1 (this post) will show how I made the heart blocks, and part 2 will show how to I put them together, and the borders.

Step 1: Gather your scraps.
For each 10.5″ x 10.5″ (unfinished) block, you will need:
Twenty one 2.5″ squares of color
Four 2.5″ squares of background
One 4.5″ square of background
You can use squares from a single color family or mix them up. You can use a variety of prints, solids and batiks. Be sure to include some “surprises” like a couple of squares of bold stripes or checks, or a square of a different color. Be sure to include prints of different scales as well. You can also use up bits of that ugly fabric in the bottom of your scrap drawer. This block will look good with more variety but don’t worry if there are repeats.

I made my heart blocks using squares within a single color family. I had previously sorted my scraps by color, so I just pulled a few scraps and cut several 2.5″ squares.

Step 2: Sew them into groups of three. Don’t over-think this. Just randomly pick them up and sew them into threes. I just made sure I didn’t have two identical fabric next to each other. Press to one side or press them open. I prefer to press seams to one side in this step.

Step 3: Layout your three-square units as shown. Five units placed vertically at the bottom and two units on top placed horizontally. If you pressed the seams to one side, make sure adjacent units in your layout have seams going in the opposite directions. Again, don’t worry about fabric placement. I tried to make sure no two adjacent squares are of the same fabric but not a big deal if they do.

Step 4: Sew the bottom five units together and the top two units together. Try to match seams as much as possible but don’t sweat it. If you pressed seams to one side, and if you made sure the seams go in opposite directions when you layout, they should nest together very well. Here I show (the back of ) the bottom five units sewn together and the top two units sewn together. I tried different pressing strategies and found pressing open worked best. So I recommend you press seams open at this step.

Step 5: Draw a diagonal line corner to corner on the four background 2.5″ squares. Place the squares on the right corner squares of the bottom unit and the top corner squares of the top unit as shown. Pin them in place if you like. Sew on the drawn line.

Step 6: Cut away at a quarter inch from the sew line for all four squares. Press towards the background fabric.

Step 7: Sew the 4.5″ square of the background square to the top unit. Press towards the background square.
Step 8: Sew the top and botton units together. Press seams open. Give the entire block a good press.
Your block should measure 10.5″ x 10.5″

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Stay tuned for part 2 – where I put them together and add a fun scrappy border!
