Bali Sunrise – Show Your Stripes blog hop

Welcome to my stop in the Show your Stripes blog hop hosted by Carla of Creatin’ in the Sticks. Today is the first day. Please visit everyone that is showing a project today. Links at the end of this post.

The inspiration for this quilt was this awesome picture of sunset in Lembongan island, Bali, Indonesia from my friend, Rupa.

I made this quilt top in March of 2019 for an Island Batik Ambassador challenge. It uses red, orange, turquoise and blue from the Island Batik collection Soul Song and a number of Island Batik foundations. The quilt design is a modern interpretation of the log cabin block.

The back is Benartex Essential Gradations.

For the bottom of the blue section, I quilted parallel wavy lines. Calm seas. Light blue variegated thread – Aurifil 50wt.

For the top of the blue section, I added a few swrils. The seas are generally calm but with occasional turbulence. Darker blue thread – Aurifil 50 wt.

For the red section, I tried to quilt a “sunrise” but it does not show because the red and white stripes are too dominant. Red thread in the dark red sections, and orange thread in the lighter red/orange section. Both are Aurifil 50 wt.

You can see the sunrise over the waves from the back.

We had a rough week in Texas. Winter storm, unusually low temperatures, no power, water and internet for over two days. My hearts on point quilt and part 2 of the tutorial are delayed. There were some lovely comments on part 1 of the tutorial, and I am sorry I was not able to respond last week. I will try to catch up with all my emails and comments in the next couple of days. I am also attending the virtual QuiltCon Together this weekend. The wonderful quilts and lectures are keeping me busy.

I always love seeing a fabric interpretation of a real scene. The stripes are a fun idea for a memory of a beautiful sunset. The quilting is terrific.

What a stunning quilt. It truly depicts a sunrise beautifully. Your quilting was also right on. And on top of that it was stripped. Perfection.

Beautiful quilt! Those colors are just fabulous. The weather sure has not been kind to so many in Texas. Hopefully you are able to warm up.

Stunning quilt! I love it and the quilting is just beautiful. Sorry for your nasty week – hope it is over and you are able to recover quickly. Ice storms and power failures are the worst!

I LOVE this! Thanks for sharing this lovely design, even through the nasty weather and other terrible issues Texas is having! I really enjoy seeing your quilting too, and really like how you changed it as you moved up the quilt.

What a lovely quilt. Your quilt stitching is marvelous! Hope that things are looking better for you in Texas. We lived through a derecho in August and had no electricity for 12 DAYS! It was a tough lesson but we talked about how much worse it could be if it had been winter. Thinking of you all and holding you in my heart.

Wow, this is gorgeous! And that quilting tells such a story! I love it. I hope you had minimal impact from the storm and are doing ok. So glad you enjoyed QuiltCon–I did too, and was glad to be able to do it at home.
