Project Quilting is a series of challenges along the lines of the popular TV series Project Runway. PQ is organized by Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams and Trisha Frankland of Quilt Chicken. Season 13 just finished and it was hugely popular with almost 200 entries for most episodes. Each “episode” is a challenge with a theme or prompt. We are given one week to design, make and complete a finished project. In this blog post, I will show my projects for this season. This is the first time I made something for all six episodes. All my projects, by design, were approximately 10″ square.
I am happy to host Thank Goddness It’s Finished Friday – TGIFF this week. Linky party is at the bottom of this post. Please link a blog post showing your finished projects.
All the colors was the first prompt.
Fusible appliqué with no space between appliquéd units. I did not stitch down the fused pieces. Just quilted a very tight grid – less than 1/4” spacing.
My inspiration was diffusion of colors in a liquid.
As I was making this, it reminded me of scales of the rainbow fish (the children’s book) – especially as the scales kept falling because my fusible was old and not very effective.
Second prompt was In Silhouette. When I think of silhouettes I think of the Rubin’s vase. Is it a vase or is it two faces? To make this vase, I took a selfie of my profile and converted that to a silhouette. That’s me – unedited.
The Third prompt was kitchen influence. When I read the announcement on Kim’s site I was in the kitchen putting away groceries – a box of strawberries to be exact. I made the first thing that popped in my head.
MQG had a block study called strawberry wild by Sara Flynn @mama_makes_time in May 2020. It’s such a simple and clever block. This is a 12” square block. I made the block and trimmed to make it a strawberry shape.
The fourth prompt was mining diamonds.
I made the Kohinoor.
The Kohinoor Diamond is one of the largest diamonds in the world. It is an alluvial diamond from India but currently part of the British Crown Jewels.
The diamond is mostly colorless but I chose red. Throughout its history, the Kohinoor is associated with conflict, violence, blood – hence the red.
There’s a lot more I can say about the Kohinoor and the British Crown Jewels but I’ll save it for another day 😂
The fifth prompt was rhythm and repetition.
I have interpreted this quite literally. Inspired by a Anton Stankowski art work I found on Pinterest.
The sixth and final prompt was flying geese. I quickly drafted a block in EQ8. It is a wedge-based, New York beauty type of block. PQ said you had to use a minimum of 5 flying geese. I made three wedges, six geese. Went together quickly with no fuss at all.
Here’s the Linky Party. Be sure to link your finishes!
Love love all six of your projects. Your artistic talent continues to amaze (stupefy as in the Kahinoor diamond and the wedges of geese) me. Thanks for hosting!

Your six projects for Project Quilting are so much fun. Thanks for hosting TGIFF!
Congrats on finishing all six challenges. Well done.
Hi Vasudha, it’s great that you got to participate in all of the challenges. I especially love your first one 🙂 Thanks for hosting TGIFF – I finally have a finish to share. Yeah! Have a great weekend.
Each of your challenge pieces resonate with creativity and bold graphic designs. Thank you for sharing your thought process for each. I’ve made a note to consider participating in Project Quilting in 2023.
I love the fused quilt with all the colours.
Each quilt is so different and unique. I like all of them, so creative. The vase with your silhouette is so cool!
