Folded Notes pattern release and TGIFF

Folded Notes is my second pattern published in the Island Batik Spring/Summer 2020 catalog. This and my other pattern, A Gathering Place, are available in my Etsy store. Both printed and digital copies are on sale till the end of the year.

I am also happy to host TGIFF (Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday) on my birthday, November 20th. Head over to the bottom of this post to link your blog post of your finished or un-finished craft projects.

I had an initial version of this design almost 3 years ago – see this IG post as part of Sandra Walker’s #30quiltdesignschallenge2018. The block is very simple – just two triangles of different sizes. By using dark colors for the small and light colors for the large triangle, you see a folded notes effect. See the baby quilt below that uses prints and solids for the folded notes effect.

This throw-size quilt uses Island Batik foundations – a collection of fabrics in a wide range of colors that are always available. The “basics” are abstract batik prints. The “blenders” have a repeating geometric or other pattern. I used Island Batik solid black as background. The black makes the bright batiks pop.

It is a very simple beginner pattern with just half-square triangles (HSTs) and rectangles. The placement of the blocks makes an interesting visual effect. There is ample negative space to try out some cool quilting designs.

It is hard to see the quilting on a black background. I quilted a line of feathers weaving in and out around the folded notes from one end to the other. For the triangles, I simply quilted some wide wavy lines.

As with most of my patterns, I have a baby quilt size as well. This quilt uses all fabric from my stash. The prints are Akoma by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Cotton + Steel Fabrics. The solids are all Kona cotton – oasis, red and sand. The binding is a red and white stripe I had and I can’t find a name or designer for it. There is always demand for baby quilts. A coworker has a baby or my husband asks for one at short notice for his coworker’s baby. This quilt went to my son’s friends from college – Isaac and Julia. They had a baby a couple of months ago in the midst of a pandemic!

Such a great pattern! So glad to hear IB picked it up. There are so many of us who were in that design challenge who have published several of our designs. We all need crowns lol! Just today I was sewing up one of mine that headed for a magazine. 🙂

Hi Vasudha! Happy Happy Birthday to you! I wish you a year filled with many blessings. Oh, your pattern reminds me so much of the origami I learned while in fifth grade. My teacher had spent a few years in Japan and she brought the culture back with her. We all learned to eat with chopsticks – it was a great year and it has stuck with me forever. Anyway, back to your fabulous quilt and pattern. The IB solid black basic really does it’s job in highlighting those rich tones and brightness. Congrats on the release of your second pattern. {{Hugs}} and take care. ~smile~ Roseanne

It’s a lovely pattern, and I especially love the effect you achieved with color and value placement in the batik version. Very striking!
